Special Student and Stand-Alone Courses
After reviewing the proposal for a Certificate in GIS and an MSc and Masters in GIS and RS, it was agreed among relevant stakeholders that selected stand-alone courses should be made available. These courses are highly application-based and ground themselves in a systematic review of existing documents such as Guyana's LCDS 2030, the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission Act (Cap. 59:05), the National Geospatial Information Management Policy, the Integrated Disaster Risk Management Implementation Strategy, the Guyana National Land Use Plan, the Town and Country Planning Act (Cap. 20:01), and the specific needs identified during the stakeholders’ engagement. The results of these reviews guided the recommendation of the following courses from the MSc/M GIS/RS as special student/stand-alone/specialist workshop courses:
1. GIS 5201 - Geospatial Data Acquisition and Management
2. GIS 5203 - Geospatial Analyses for Crime and Criminal Activities
3. GIS 5204 - Geospatial Applications in Mining
4. GIS 5302 - Fluvial and Coastal GIS
5. GIS 5303 - Socio-Economic/Quantitative GIS
6. GIS 5304 - Media and Journalism GIS
7. GIS 5305 – GIS in Health
Delivery
In addition to having these courses offered in the MSc/Masters in GIS and RS as core and electives, they will also be made available as stand-alone courses where an individual/organisation (who is not part of the graduate programme) can register for the course. Participation in such courses would be in accordance with all the guidelines of the master programmes in GIS and RS.
- As special student courses, individuals are required to enrol for the course with the regular schedule of the MSc/Masters in GIS and RS programmes.
- As stand-alone or workshop courses, they will run on a needs basis, where organisations/individuals can request for a specific course to be delivered over the weekends, summer or a workshop approach. In this way, the course will be delivered under particular guidelines based on the arrangements between the University and Organisation.
Target Audience
These courses are designed for geomatics engineers, surveyors, environmental scientists, ecologists, urban and regional planners, land use professionals, law enforcement professionals, criminology researchers, police, mining engineers, geologists, environmental managers, GIS specialists, hydrologists, geographers, engineers, consultants, market analysts, regional development professionals, transportation planners, social scientists, economists, journalists, media professionals, communication professionals, and data journalists, among others.
Entry Requirements for Courses
Persons will have to be graduates, professionals working in the relevant field, or those who might have obtained the Certificate in GIS.

All course guidelines remain the same, as noted in the course outlines. The only difference is that upon the course's successful completion, the participants will be awarded an appropriate certificate per the Department/University guidelines.
