Learning and Assessment
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) are crucial parts of society, benefiting a wide range of industries. From disaster management to insurance, urban and regional planning to government agencies, and climate change to urban resilience, the scope of GIS/RS software is huge and keeps on growing and expanding. This is the reason corporations worldwide are looking for qualified GIS experts to bring together the geospatial data that will help inform future strategies and decision-making. The holistic design of the proposed programme by the Department of Geography means that students will be inundated with an extensive skill set that covers all bases required by employers in this sector. The graduates of the programme will also be equipped with an in-depth understanding of topical and relevant subjects in this field, enabling them to pursue a wide range of exciting career opportunities in both the private and public sectors. Students admitted to the programme will be introduced to the most widely used commercial/industry standard software as well as open-source software, often utilising cloud computing infrastructure. Hands-on experience will be emphasised, and students in the programme will work on real-world geospatial scenarios.
Therefore, the proposed GIS/RS programme prepares students to succeed as professionals in today’s job market through an innovative curriculum that focuses on building critical thinking, technical, and practical skills. The curriculum for the programme includes a mixture of classroom and lab instruction, hands-on projects, self-instructed learning and collaborative learning. To achieve this, the Department maintains state-of-the-art facilities, including a technology-enhanced virtual classroom and a GIS software-enabled computer lab, to support students’ learning experiences as they utilise the latest software and hardware. The department provides a supportive learning environment where students work closely with faculty and peers while enjoying numerous opportunities to participate in campus, city, regional, and national professional activities.
